at the sidewall. 
But I suppose it was just some sort of defect in that batch. They were on closeout at TireRack, but only available in the fitment for one side of the vehicle (stupid way to design a tire, IMO). 3 of the 4 had considerable separation on the sidewalls, leading me to believe it was the tire itself, not anything to do with the way I two of the tires were "flipped" to be mounted directionally on the opposite side (which was said to be "fine" to do by one of the technical support folks at TireRack).
